Rien Sans Dieu – Hasselteraak

In Hasselteraken, the bottom plate is bent so that it continues into stem. You then speak of ships built on heaves. These sailing ships were popular for transporting peat in the northern Netherlands. Hasselteraken are therefore inextricably linked with the history of peat extraction in the Netherlands.

The Rien Sans Dieu was initially used to transport peat via the Hoogeveense Vaart to Apeldoorn. At the onset of winter, the ship was sailed high up (“plied”) with peat to Apeldoorn. Before the shore in Apeldoorn, the bargee family lived on selling peat to individuals in the winter. When the vessel was motorized, a Vowler 16 HP and a Blackstone OP 26 HP side propeller (“lame arm”) and a Kromhout 4 GSV 52 were installed successively.
