It took five years to turn the “Polestar” into a true houseboat. And no wonder, since the “Polestar” still sailed with cargo until 1998. Throughout the Netherlands, as well as to Belgium and Germany. Considering that the “Pole Star” was built in 1927, the ship thus has a long track record: 71 years!
The current owners fell for the vessel because of the space on board, but also because of its beautiful sheer (that’s the “crooked” line between bow and stern) and sturdiness. The “Polestar” may be a houseboat, but it can still sail, too.
As a result, the owners try to go out as often as possible. The photo shows the “Polestar” drying up near Schiermonnikoog. It is one of the advantages of living on the water: one moment you are living in the center of Rotterdam, the next you are far from everything and everyone on a sandbank in the Wadden Sea. Those who live in a “normal” house find it hard to imagine such a thing anyway.
